Ustad Sultan Khan recently released his new album 'Ustad and the Divas'. The album features songs by Chitra, Sunidhi Chauhan and Sheya Ghosal. The album also contains remixes of Ustad's tracks by DJ MIT. Let's talk with DJ MIT and know more about the remixed tracks in the album.

Firstly, give us a gist of the album, Ustad and the Divas.
Well to start with, a very abstract & versatile kind of album, I ain't even sure if they have a specific genre for these types of albums. It is a unique combination of Ustad's matured voice with that of young singers like Chitra, Sunidhi Chauhan and Shreya Ghosal. The album is also very Indian in nature.

Which songs from the album have you remixed?
I have remixed 'Leja Leja' Title track & 'Billo' both the songs have 2 different remixes. 'Leja Leja' has a club mix & a reggaeton & 'Billo' has a club & a down tempo mix.

Since, the songs in this album have more traditional, what kind of music have you created out of the tracks?
It was a little difficult at the start coz I am a DJ & I have nothing to do with classical music. But then after hearing the tracks for the first time, I really liked them. I had never heard anything like this before. It was simple….. I was making dance music, something that will make people move, and that is exactly what I did.

Ustad Sultan Khan and Remix was not something anybody would think of

Was it a challenging task to give new mood to Ustad's songs?
Well of course it was challenging. Ustad Sultan Khan and Remix was not something anybody would think of or would even appreciate for that matter, since people who listen to his music are totally on a different wave length than what I was about to create. So I had to keep it real as well as remix it & I think that was challenging enough for me.

Tell us how u started your career and how has it been so far?
I started as a Disc Jockey in 2000 at this club called Flame which is at Le Meridien Chennai. I was there for about 2 years and then I moved back to Mumbai. Here I worked in a couple of clubs and by then I was matured enough as a dj to understand what music programming & composing was all about. I then got myself a keyboard and started practicing. Self learning was the only option since there aint any schools or anyone who will that teach you the softwares correctly.

This album also marks the launch a new record label, YBR. So, how was the experience of working for a new label? How were Vinay Sapru and Radhika Rao involved in the making of this album?
It was a fantastic experience. Everything was new .There was so much energy everywhere. Vinay Sapru and Radhika Rao are the best people I've come across, very supportive and they know exactly what they want so that makes things really easy.

What are you views on music piracy?
It's probably the saddest thing that's happening in the world today. It's robbing people of their livelihood.

The last two years have seen the virtual transformation of the global music industry due to physical and online piracy. It has to stop.

People should know that piracy is STEALING

What is the way to stop it?
If someone steals something from you, you can''t do anything about it unless you know who did it. On the internet, when someone downloads a copyrighted song file and, without authorization, uploads it to a web site where anyone can download it, there''s no way to know who is responsible. Hopefully music companies all around the world are working hard to put an end to this. People should know that piracy is STEALING until and unless they don't get caught and penalized they won't understand that or there should be at least awareness. Hopefully something would be done about it, but it better be soon

Future projects?
Currently I am working on my solo album which is a compilation of remixes as well as my original compositions. Then there are a couple of other projects with other artists for YBR Records.
