"The Song Banjar Is Pretty Much The Situation Of Kabul Today" - Raghav Sachar

By IndiaFM News Bureau

The new composer on the block has already gotten the industry to notice him with his very first film album. Raghav

Sachar has arrived with the music of Kabul Express and he spoke to IndiaFM in an exclusive interview.

First and foremost give us a background of yourself?
I started at the age of four when I learnt to play the harmonica. My father used to play that and after that I asked him to gift

me an instrument every birthday. So I was inclined to music from a very early age. Then I studied music from Australia.

My main subject was composition and my main instrument was the saxophone. Over there I picked up a lot of other

instruments. Basically every year I added a new instrument to my list. I'm 25 now and know 25 instruments.

I also compose. I have had two albums that have been released earlier. The first one was in 2003 called Raghav for the

first time. That was with HMV-Sa Re Ga Ma which was mostly an instrumental album. Then I released a vocal album with

Universal music called Raghav Sachar 24 Karat. Now I did Kabul Express. I sing and I compose, I arrange and

engineer music as well.

I'm 25 now and know 25 instruments.

How did you bag Kabul Express?
I was called by the Vice-President of Yash Raj Films for a meeting. They initially wanted only one promotional song for

Kabul Express as the movie did not have any songs in it. The brief that was given to me was that it should be a

catchy number. People should hear a couple of times and be able to sing it. It should have a nice hook-line and have a

little bit of an Afghan element to it. The song basically is a fusion world music track. There is a Qawalliand

Sufi feel to it. There is a new instrument that I have used called the saxonet. It is a blend between a saxophone

and a clarinet. So that is the instrument that is playing in the beginning and the end of the promotional track. It has a nice

hollow kind of tone to it which gives a sense of longing when you hear the song. The notes are a bit Arabic which gives it

an Afghan feel. So the entire track was made keeping these things in mind.

They liked it a lot and they told me to make something more. So Kabir Khan, the director and Aditya Chopra who wrote

the lyrics and I sat down together and made some more tunes. They liked whatever I came up with and decided to make

an entire album. Initially the three songs that were made were sung by me. Then we decided to include some other

vocalists as well. So Shubha Mudgal, Sunidhi Chauhan and KK were featured.

Music is only used on promotional basis and in the background? Did that disappoint you?
Not Really! This film was completed in May 2006 and the offer came to me in July. I don't think it made any sense for

them to go back and film a song. The film actually doesn't require any songs in it. Having a song in the middle of a war

will just sound too cheeky. I think it is a good decision by the director of not having any songs in the film but again it is

also a good idea to make a promotional video for the promotion of Kabul Express. This is probably the best

possible way to do that considering John Abraham and Arshad Warsi are featuring in it. However it is a light-hearted film.

John's and Arshad's characters have truly come out in the music video and when people watch it, they will come in to

watch the film.

I think it is a good decision by the

director of not having any songs in the film but again it is also a good idea to make a promotional video for the promotion

of Kabul Express.

Was it difficult composing for a film like Kabul Express which isn't your conventional film?
It was actually very good for me to compose for this film because it turned out to be more or less like composing for my

own album. The brief that was given to me was that there would be only one song. Yash Raj was very supportive and

they gave me freedom to compose whatever I felt like and then they would hear it. They liked and approved everything.

They didn't ask me for any change as it turned out to be exactly what they wanted.

The film is semi-autobiographical for director Kabir Khan. So how involved was he with the music?
Kabir was involved with the entire film but the music initiative was taken by Yash Raj Music. I had never met Kabir before.

We hit it off when we met. He was involved with the music as ultimately it was his own film. So as far as the connection

between the song and him goes, I don't think there is much connection. But as far as the song and its connection with

the mood of the film is concerned, then it is quite good. The song Banjar is pretty much the situation of Kabul

today. So we are taking of a journey. From point A to point B of a song, the track has changed completely.

Are there any more film projects in the pipeline?
Not at the moment. I just hope now that since the music of Kabul Express has released, I will get some offers. I will also

be approaching some production houses and sending my CDs across. This was a good break for me as Yash Raj was

very supportive of a new-comer.

What do you prefer private albums, shows or composing for films?
They are all very different. When you compose for a private album, you are the center of attention. Everything is going to

be about you. While doing movies, it is for another person. You do it for a purpose, so that working process is different.

Live shows are something that I thrive for because that is when you come to know what you are all about. The good thing

is that since I play 25 instruments and compose and arrange music, I have different ways to unleash my creativity. It gives

me a lot of more opportunity to create different music.

And do you prefer singing or composing?
Again they are two different things. Composing can be for yourself or for other people. I can't exactly differentiate

between the two. I enjoy both of them.
