By IndiaFM News Bureau

Subhash Kapoor is a documentary filmmaker who has turned towards making feature film with Say Salaam India. The film revolving around cricket will release

amidst the World Cup hye. The confident filmmaker converses with IndiaFM about his upcoming film, passion for cricket and making documentary

films.

You are a documentary filmmaker, how did your foray into main stream Bollywood happen?
I made documentaries for about five to seven years and I realized that the documentary medium is deteriorating. And as a filmmaker and a creative person I felt that my

work should reach as many people as possible. But unfortunately the way we have the documentary scenario in our country, the documentary filmmakers not only

struggle to make profit but also don't find a lot of audience. Their struggle doesn't end even after they have made the film. Even after doing all the hard work at the end

of the day you realize that the number of audiences that you are reaching out to is very limited. So that is one reason and the other being that at the end of the day I am

very keen and interested in making films.

The way we have the documentary scenario in our country, the documentary

filmmakers not only struggle to make profit but also don't find a lot of audience.

Tell us about some of the documentary films that you have made?
I have made a film called Ram Leela for Shekhar Kapoor. He had started a company called digital talkies way back in 2001-2002. Digital talkies had organized

Asia's first digital festival in India in which this film also participated and won. The jury consisted of Shyam Benegal, Mrinal Sen etc. Then I did a four film series with

discovery which is called Urdu Hai Jiska Naam, it is about the history and revolution of Urdu language. It is one of those academically inclined works. The film

was very well received. I had researched on the subject for two years before we went of to shoot; I spent a lot of time on this one. And then recently about a year back I

have finished piping the work on the history of old Delhi. You know there are five walks through old Delhi, you stand at one point and you can tell what happened there in

1947 or in 1867, what all the typical old Delhi food you get there, markets etc. Then there are historical and political landmarks, history, culture etc. I am still trying to find

international buyers for that CD.

What made you decide on a theme around cricket?
Two reasons. One being that I myself am a huge cricket fan. There are two types of cricket fans in our country one who will cheer if India is winning and feel bad if we

are loosing. The others are the ones who will spend hours discussing and talking about the match in terms of what went wrong etc. I consider myself in the second

category. Secondly the person who inspired me to make this film was Irfan Pathan. I told him when I met him once when I was doing shooting different spots with the

Indian cricket team for a World cup client.

What inspired me was that this guy comes from such a humble background. Living in a tiny house with a family of six to eight. Waking up at five in the morning and

cleaning up the entire mob and then doing the same thing in the evening. And still practicing cricket with complete passion and dedication, which is very heartening. I

really salute this spirit and that struggle. Somehow or the other its not only to do with the fact that he comes from a humble background but also that he symbolizes the

new face of Indian cricket, which is unapologetic about his background and also is proactive and gripping. You know all these boys whether it is Kaif, Yuvraj, Bhajji, and

Irfan have brought in a kind of aggression that was missing in our team. Last I remember of little bit of aggression and a bit of attitude was there in Kapil Dev world cup

83' team.

The person who inspired me to make this film was Irfan

Pathan

Give us a brief account on your film Say Salaam India
Say Salaam India is a salute to the small town Indian cricketers. It talks about how in small villages and towns and areas which are deprived of the modern

facilities and despite this how they pursue this game with passion and hard work. It is a salute to that passion and uncompromising love to the game of cricket.

There are about 4 films coming up with the theme as cricket, how different would your film be?
To the best of my knowledge around World Cup only two films are releasing. One being my film and the other being Hattrick. People are making films around

cricket but to best of my knowledge Meerabai Not Out is not coming before May. I don't know about Shoonya. So what we can talk concretely about is

Hattrick and Say Saalam India. I have no idea of what Hattrick is about, but of what little idea I have the film has cricket as its background and at

the front they have another story. But in my film I can say it very humbly that in a way it's a first of its kind, we aren't trying to tell a love story with a cricket background

to it. It's a hardcore cricket film and also first cricket sports film in our country. The best dialogue in our film is 'Jaante ho duniya mein sabse khoobsurat awaz kya hoti

hai jab ball bat ke bicho ake lagti hai - taak'. It heart of the film is cricket.

Sanjay Suri and Milind Soman play rival coaches in your film. How was it to work with the two?
I feel really blessed to have worked with these gentlemen in my very first film. Sanjay is always known to for doing performance oriented roles. Sandhya Mridaul again is

of the same category, Milind Soman, is also great to work with. It was rewarding to work with all of them. All these guys were very involved in the film. For me it was

very satisfying.

What scope does a female character played by Sandhya Mridual have in this film on cricket? And how was it working with her?
Sandhya plays Sanjay's wife in the film. She is a working woman and teaches in a local college. She is a very supportive wife, she has a cricket fanatic husband and she

has also got a five year old mentally challenged spastic kid. We actually got the kid from the spastic society of Bombay who despite all the physical difficulties is a huge

cricket fan. Sandhya Mridual plays a wife who can go to any extent to support her husband.

Who are the other actors in the film?
There is Sachin Khedekar who plays the school principal, and then there is Manoj Pahwa who plays a wrestling coach. Manoj articulates the point of view in country

which is very real and that cricket is responsible for killing all the sports in our country. And the over hyping of cricket has led to the detouration of other sports like

kabbadi, hockey etc. Manoj is a wrestling coach in a municipal school where these four kids in our film study. Their characters are based on the four cricketers Dhoni,

Sehwag, Irfan and Pathan. These kids aren't allowed to play cricket because their sports teacher Manoj Pahwa hates cricket. Everyone will think that with Manoj Pahwa

in the film, it will be a comedy but that's not the case. There is a fun element to his character but also there is a substantial amount of seriousness to what he says. Then

there is Shraddha Nigam, Vinay pathak , Virendra Saxena in the film.

Everyone will think that with Manoj Pahwa in the film, it will be a comedy but that's

not the case.

Does the film have scope for music?
The music for the film is given by Gaurav Dayal. This is Gaurav's first feature film. He is a big name in the world of Hindi and Punjabi pop music in North India. He has

worked with Daler Mehendi and Mikka. I have worked with him earlier and I feel that he has great talent. Anybody who has heard the song says that it is rocking. The

music is very peppy; it has an element of fusion. There is an underlined energy in the film which the music has been able to capture. There are five tracks in the film from

which only three are put in the film. The songs are sung by Sonu Nigam, Naresh Iyer and Shubha Mudgal.

When are you planning to release the film?
The film will release on March 30 by Adlabs.

What are the other films that you are working on?
I came to Bombay with seven scripts and now I have made one of the seven, let's see what happens next.
