Watch Shakalaka... song Video
Although Barsaat, Mere Jeevan Saathiand Dosti had a bumpy ride at the box office, director Suneel Darshan has a lot of conviction in his work and is very hopeful of his impending flick. In an exclusive chat with IndiaFM, Suneel Darshan claims that Shakalaka Boom Boom is a no-nonsense musical entertainer with great performances.
Shakalaka Boom Boom is an unusual title
Well the movie is about the song. The story of the film is all about the song, the story behind the making of a superhit album and Shakalaka Boom Boom is the number one song of that album. So, it''s a film related to that song and the story behind it. I needed a title which would sound unusual, which would transcend the barriers of language and something which would be more universal. Shakalaka Boom Boom is one phonetic musical sound which can be used anywhere.
You''ve been known for emotional potboilers, how come you thought of making a musical?
Well I kept making family films in the past, romantic films, action films and then after I did Dosti, Mere Jeevan Saathi and Barsaat I wanted to turn over to a new leaf. I wanted to do something that I have not done before. So I designed a cinema which was younger in its concept, more in the face, more about characters that are grey. I wanted to talk about characters without being judgmental about them. Shakalaka Boom Boom is a film which I feel is very new in its stylization, in its editing techniques and its narration.
It''s a fresh cast that you''ve put together....
Well the casting of the film was planned in accordance with the demand of the script. I''ve worked with Bobby Deol in my last two films and I have always felt he is India''s most under-rated actor. I think he is fantastic. As an actor he has the ability to deliver on par with the best behavior. Bobby Deol is the best actor in the Deol family. When I had this character of AJ in the film, Bobby Deol fitted the bill. He had the style, the poise, he had the age of a man who is you know successful.
And in contrast to him I wanted to put up a new boy, a newcomer. Fortunately Upen Patel had walked in to office one day and I thought here is a guy with tremendous attitude, body language, and a very photogenic face. He really had the energy of a newcomer and that suited my character very well. He is playing Reggie, who was Raghav in India in the US called Reggie. Reggie is an underground music guy - a singer, dancer, and a performer who is looking for a break into the mainstream. And that''s how these two boys - contrasting each other very well, fitted my bill.
I did cast another girl Sanaa Pancholi, shot with her for two or three days. But then I decided not to continue working with her and resolved to have Kangana in the film.
You have gorgeous leading ladies in your film... How did they come about?
I saw Kangana Ranaut in the Gangster. I thought she is a girl who has potential to be a big Bollywood actress. She has a fresh face, fresh body language. In fact this was sometime in the beginning of 2006. I watched that movie and knew that I wanted to cast her in the film. She was not available at the time of starting the film. I did cast another girl Sanaa Pancholi, shot with that girl for two or three days. But then I decided not to continue working with her and resolved to have Kangana into the film. She is a very fine artist. She is still young, I think she is 20 and yet very mature. She understands the scene, she understands what the shot demands and I think she has got a bright future. Where Celina Jaitly is concerned, I think she is a fabulous actor to work with. She has been tremendously cooperative and absolutely professional. I wish there would have been more professionals like this. Because it would be much better to operate in Bollywood if we had more professional actors like Celina Jaitly.

Shakalaka Boom Boom seems to be a launch pad for Upen Patel…
Yes. When I first time met Upen Patel, he told me he was playing one of the lead roles in 36 China Town. I watched the film and I was like okay - a five minute appearance, a song and four shots, and he is out of the film! But even those five minutes and the one song that he delivered made me think that this guy has potential which is not being exploited. I saw Namastey London. I thought Upen was there in the film for barely 10 minutes not more than that. He hasn''t been exploited to his full potential. His body language, his style, his attitude, his dynamism all is really so aggressive. And that is great for a film maker. I fell I have channelised his potential to its hilt in Shakalaka Boom Boom.

The promos of the film look very hip-n-stylish...
The promos of the film reflect the story. It is young, it is modern and non-judgmental. It is telling you about the world of music and the extent to which rivalries go in the music world or any other field today. But since I was talking about the world of music, I thought this was easy for me to reflect the emotions of these characters. It has very close contact to realities; I feel it is very easy to react to and understand the characters I''m talking about today.
There are instances in the promo when Celina seems to be physically demanding from Upen?
I don''t think that has really been underlined. Celina plays a very natural young girl named Sheena. She plays a very successful PR professional, like a public relations officer and publicist for music companies. And well, she has her own demands, her own way of using her professional abilities somewhere to get what she wants in life. And when she does not achieve how she uses the same abilities to destroy this boy. I think Celina has a very interesting character although it is not very lengthy in the film. I have interacted with a lot of girls from this area and I feel that this character is very close to kind of people I have met.
Media speculation says that Shakalaka Boom Boom is a take on the cold war between Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan…
No comments on that. I think rivalry is there in every sphere. It could happen in any business. So I wouldn''t like to pin point that it is about Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan. They are both fabulous guys. I''m sure they couldn''t be Reggie or AJ.
How was the transition from Nadeem Shravan to Himesh Reshammiya?
I''ve worked with Anand Milind, Nadeem Shravan and Himesh Reshamiya. Each composer has his own distinct school, his own distinct style. I just know that each of them has great potential. Nadeem and Shravan have been legends in the past. They have ruled the 90''s and the first half of 2000''s. Their potential is definitely unparalleled. But that does not in any way demean Himesh Reshamiya''s abilities. I think today Himesh is the flavour of the season.
Amitabh Bachchan and SRK are fabulous guys. I''m sure they couldn''t be Reggie or AJ.
And Himesh''s music is already a chartbuster
Himesh Reshammiya is fabulous. I think currently he is the most happening and rocking music composer who delivers in figures and has popular appeal. It was great working with him because he was enthusiastic, he wanted to be a part of my cinema and it is very exciting for a film maker when a technician who holds esteem and repute wants to be a part of your cinema and wants to deliver good work.
With India missing out in the World Cup, do you think your film stands a good chance at the Box Office?
Well I was very sure that India would keep playing and I thought India would make it to the finals. It is unfortunate that our team did not make it. I was aware that the cricket matches are going to be on and I was sure that I wanted to release Shakalaka Boom Boom on the 6th of April and it is good that film doesn''t have the opposition of cricket today. But I feel that if a film is good it doesn''t have to fear opposition. You know maybe when the match is not on the viewers will come and watch your film and definitely not everyone in the country is tuned to the television set. We do have a sizeable portion of people who and a lot of youth who like watching cinema and who do come to multiplexes.
I was sure that I wanted to release Shakalaka Boom Boom on the 6th of April and it is good that film doesn''t have the opposition of cricket today.
What are your future plans?
There is a lot of cinema within me yet wanting to find its way out. I have several actors like Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol, Upen Patel signed up with my production Shri Krishna International and I look forward to making films with them. I will be launching my son Shiv Darshan as an actor next year. Hopefully a lot of good cinema is going to happen from him.
What is the USP of Shakalaka Boom Boom and why should we watch it?
Firstly, because it is a fresh film, very novel. It is not something that you keep watching everyday. It''s a very stylized film. It doesn''t talk shit. It doesn''t have any mundane comedy happening. It''s an honest film, told by a filmmaker with a lot of conviction and I think that should be the reason why you watch the film. Besides that of course Bobby Deol''s sterling performance, a young dude Upen Patel and great music by Himesh Reshammiya are the reasons you must go watch it.
