Anurag ke raag…
Aankhon mei Direction ka Tara bangayi zindagi ki jee tod Koshish…for Anurag Basu where even TV queen Ekta Kapoor looked at him and said Kuch toh hai… His X zone of a life has been full of x- factors and Saturday Suspense but what finally got him to headline in his chosen Raah was Mahesh Bhatt''s Murder, a film though not an original wasn''t even unfaithful to the script and got Mr Basu into limelight as a successful director. Modest and artistic of a man, Anurag did not let the Saaya of his earlier failures fall onto his future projects, the exemplar of which we get to see in Gangster. Gangster, a film that got him the much needed critical acclaim but along with it, it has also proved the execution brilliance of the man behind the camera. And now having lived a life that has come full circle from struggle to making money to recognition, marriage and relationships, Anurag plans to tell us all through his next release Life in a…Metro
In Pursuit of Happiness?
Ask anyone living in a metro about his/her life and you will be stunned by the single reply one usually gets ''Hectic, No time, Mad rush''. Catching the essence of which, Anurag has spun the story of six lives and their relationships caught in a web of emotions. And the common thread being that in pursuit of achieving success, better standards of living, one has lost a lot in life. In pursuit of building a well furnished house with comforts and other riches, one has failed to build a home. Some have lost on love while the others have not yet got the time for love. After all it is one city with countless emotions. Anurag feels "Hum saari zindagi kuch aur behtar ki talaash mei guzaar dete hai aur kuch jyaada ki chaah mei guzaar dete hai... talaash toh khatam nahi hoti waqt khatam ho jaata hai”
In thy name of Inspiration ….
On asking Anurag what inspired him to write such a story he says, ''Look around and you will notice how living in a big city affects your day to day life, long working hours, tensions to pay your EMI, making money, coping up with time, competitions, expectations et all. We are all part of a rat race and so all these things were phenomenal that motivated me to make a film on this subject. And how did the idea of building such vivid characters click to him, ''I still travel by local train, observe people walking around me and just looking at them inspired me. Each one of them has a different character, different story to tell. There is so much of drama and emotions in each one of our lives.
I still travel by local train, observe people walking around me and just looking at them inspired me to make Metro.
Shiney Ahuja ….Hazaaroin Khwaishein Aisi…
Shiney is playing this principled talented guy from whom, when in college, everyone expected to make it big one day, in fact turns out to be a loser in life. He could not hold on to his job nor his wife. He finds solace in Shilpa Shetty, who too is attracted to him but has her own story to tell…
On asking Anurag, what made him select Shiney Ahuja as Akash in Metro he says that the guy is a brilliant actor but moreover a gem of a person who believes in building relationships than making money. And it is this endearing quality of Shiney Ahuja that even makes him a good friend on a personal level. Shiney Ahuja was also the first actor who Anurag narrated the Metro script to as he was writing the film whilst shooting Gangster. "Shiney aur Imran do aise log hai jinke saath main aur Mohit humesha kaam karna pasand karenge”
Shilpa ko kahaa... Phir Milenge
According to Anurag, Shilpa Shetty is one of the most underrated actresses in the film industry. And talking of whether her Big brother fame was the reason on selecting her for the role, Anurag shrugs off the option and says "I had shot with Shilpa before Big Brother”. I loved her in Revathi''s film, Phir Milenge and thought she had tremendous potential. well Shilpa too believes that Metro will change the face of Indian cinema In this film Shilpa is playing a character who gets married at the age of 23 -24yrs, has a job, which she has to leave because she gets a kid. And after having struggled all her life to build her dreams of living in a sea facing house, attaining luxuries like car and all by working hard to pay the bills and EMI''s, in these 9 yrs she realizes she has become a stranger to her Husband Kay Kay Menon under the same roof and during that period by turn of fate she meets Shiney Ahuja. They both realize that they are sailing in the same boat.
How satisfactory was her performance ….
Anurag says "People are saying this is her best work and even she feels this is her best work till date”
Shilpa Shetty is one of the most underrated actresses in the film industry.
Kay Kay was my first choice for Ranjeet''s character
"When I was writing the character of Ranjeet, without any second thoughts I wrote Kay Kay''s name before the character. He was my first choice. I have worked with Kay Kay earlier during my television days when I was shooting episodic series. Since then Kay Kay and Nivedita his wife are my very close friends. We used to meet and ask each other, when are we going to work again together. Metro is the film that has got us back
In the movie Kay Kay is Shilpa Shetty''s husband who feels that if he is meeting someone out of marriage for just 2 hrs or so and if that is giving him happiness then there is no harm in pursuing such a relationship as long as he is still providing for his family and doing nothing to harm anyone... And it is none other Kangana Ranaut with whom Kay Kay is shown philandering with.
Kangna the real Hero in Gangster
Along with Shiney, I signed on Kangna too for this film. In Metro, Kangna is playing this girl working in a call centre, who is a big emotional fool and wouldn''t think twice before killing herself. She can do anything in life. While she is in love with this married man played by Kay Kay, Sharman Joshi is the man in love with her …
If there was someone impressive in RDB after Aamir, it was Sharman
I have been fond of Sharman Joshi''s acting since his college days when I used to see him perform on stage and in theatre. Rang de Basanti mei agar Aamir khan ke baad kissi ne mujhe impress kiya toh wo tha Sharman Joshi. In Metro he is playing this typical call centre youth who has come from a different city in the hope to earn a lot of money ASAP for which he uses all his means. But unlike other boys and girls of call centre generation who take in 15000 Americans abusing in the lure of 15 grants so that they can own camera phones, hi tech mobiles, eat pizza and party.. Rahul has a bigger dream to earn money.
If Irrfan says "I hope I become a necessity for Anurag Basu …
Anurag feels the same and happily joins the mutual admiration club. "If people are not saying then let us at least compliment each other” laughs Anurag and further adds that an actor like Irrfan Khan can take a scene from one level to another level and with ease that is commendable. I have done an episodic film with him and you wouldn''t believe that during the last day of the shoot while shooting the last scene, the whole crowd had collected too see him perform and they all clapped when the scene ended… such is irrfan''s performance.
In Metro, Irrfan is a 35yr old unmarried man who meets girls through Shaadi.com and other matrimonial sites. His character is one where he cannot keep his eyes off from the girl''s boobs. So when he meets Konkona he is staring at her boobs. His character is very cute. It''s not like these characters are there for comic relief. The film itself is very light and not as dark as it is made out to be. Shilpa''s character is a little complicated but otherwise the movie is slice of life.
Koko ke saath it is my first film …
Konkona is a very professional actor, when I first approached her for the role she required a dialogue bounded script and all and I am a very unorganized person but we managed somehow. Her character in the film is that f a 30year old working woman who realizes that at the age of 30 she is still a virgin.
I chose Nafisa Ali because I love her salt and pepper look.
Dharmendra and Nafisa Ali also star in the film
Dharm jee''s character is very important in the film. Not only is he giving narration to every character he is also playing an interesting 70 year old character who some 40 years back had left his love and everything he had for the sake of earning money. His love is played by Nafisa Ali who was left standing on the platform. I chose Nafisa Ali because I love her salt and pepper look. I had seen her in one of the Barkha Dutt shows. The message that you get in this love story is that it is not important what you are leaving behind but the reason you are leaving it for. And then he realizes his mistake and comes back as Nafisa''s husband is dying.
Memorable incident
On asking Anurag of his memorable incident, it so happened to be with the two veterans. "Shooting with dharamji at Sion Station was crazy and I did not realize Dharavi was close by so a whole lot of crowd had accumulated People were jumping on tracks which really scared me and then it was so difficult to avoid the crowd in your frame, to top it you had people directly looking into the camera.
Second incident was when …
I wanted Dharmendra ji to kiss Nafisa Ali
There was a scene where Nafisa and Dharamji go to bed. The scene was such that if I were in Dharamji''s place I would have kissed Nafisa. But I was feeling very shy to ask Dharamji to kiss Nafisa and that too lip to lip. Firstly both are seniors and secondly both members of the Parliament so you can imagine.. But dharamji readily agreed and the scene is so sweet and so very beautiful. That day was most memorable for me.
Metro isn''t episodic stories or different stories culminating at one point, neither is it about stories co-incidentally connected. It is one film with one story.
Honeymoon Travels… Just Married… Salaam e Ishq... Different stories one film
What makes Metro different?
No, Metro is different. Metro isn''t episodic stories or different stories culminating at one point, neither is it about stories co-incidentally connected. It is one film with one story, it has one heart beat. Like in any orchestra how instruments play together to compliment one another similar to it is my film. In my film every character is linked. ek ki kahaani doosrei ke bina aage badegi hi nahi. It might seem episodic but it is like a chain reaction. An incident in one''s life is affecting other''s life”
I am yet to hear Metro''s music in an auto or a taxi
On complimenting Anurag for Metro''s cutting edge music, he says "music ki shuruvaat huyi thi with a bang. It came at No1 at Planet ''M'', even all people told me it is good but I am yet to hear my music in an auto and a taxi. Everyday I keep my car window down to hear Metro''s music to play somewhere. I keep on hearing it on FM channels, people keep on playing it. But I think it isn''t that much a rage to get played in an auto.

I wanted Pritam since start but Anu Malik was a fashion then
With Metro we were trying to create another Gangster, trying to make another hit. Hum khud hi banate the aur khud hi kachrein mei daalte they. Then we realized what we are trying to create is not for Metro, so lets just make good music for the film and if it works it works but lets make nice music. Pritam felt that if the film works, the music will work. Like it happened with Rang de Basanti. But I feel if the music is good the film will work. And where favoritism for Pritam is concerned, Anurag says "I wanted Pritam since my first film but at that time Anu Malik was too much in fashion and Anu was doing all Vishesh films. Then after Pritam signed Dhoom 2, I told Mukesh Bhatt I want Pritam as my Music Director. Gangster proved me right. Pritam is a very old friend, he has done a couple of TV shows with me like ''Manzilein Apni Apni, Meet etc. and now I want to work with him in all the films I make”.
Pritam felt that if the film works, the music will work. But I feel if the music is good the film will work.
I wanted Metro to be better than Gangster and Gangster to be better than Murder
Murder though was a gross earner film that gave me higher returns in terms of money, Gangster is closer to me.. Aisa nahi hai ki main original likh nahi sakta, I had time with Gangster and also because my motto was to make a film better than the earlier one. If critics had to read Gangster''s screenplay they would have outright rejected it as it was completely bizarre. With Metro too it is a conscious effort to make it better than Gangster and different from Gangster. On questioning him about his earlier films that were more or less a copy of English films he says ''agar main ab copy karoonga toh Meri biwi maar degi'' he further explains saying "I could not help making copies as I was asked to make them. Murder though was a copy of English film Unfaithful, I took up writing in my hand with that film and tried to make it different.
The screenplay of Metro is very unusual and bizarre
From the direction point of view, Gangster was a path breaking film so has Anurag experimented something new with Metro. To this Anurag says that with Metro his motto was to make a simple film as I am a big Hrishkesh Mukherjee fan. Thus Metro isn''t technically strong but screenplay wise the film follows a never heard technique. Metro ka narration bahut hi ajeeb hai bilkul alag, maine aaj tak aisa kahi nahi dekha. Let''s see how it works . And where Direction is concerned, it is one profession which involves you in the smallest of film making aspect which is why I have chosen this profession.
Metro isn''t technically strong but screenplay wise the film follows a never heard technique.
Omkara or Rang De Basanti, which one film did you like?
None! I get very angry on these films. Released in the same year as that of my film because of which I did not get any award for Gangster. Ok jokes apart they were great films and gives you a complex as a film director. But on second thought I could have made an Omkara or a Rang de Basanti but not Lage Raho Munnabhai.
The way screenplay is written for that film is very unique. You have taken just one issue and revolved your story around it. To achieve that kind of simplicity needs a lot of hard work.
There is a part of me in every character of Metro
Metro in a nutshell
It s a film that is very close to reality, a slice of life kind of flick and to give it the real feel I have even shot in all real life locations like the railway stations, bus stops, Mumbai roads etc. The characters in the film are so identifiable and common that any man watching the film can relate to it. Today that I am married, I understand what happens when you are working and how your relationship suffers. There is a part of me in every character. Working with all the actors in my film has been a boon, a gift to me as I got to know such good human beings and they will be my friends forever. It was a great experience! Whatever happens to the film we will never forget the experience of making this film.
Hmm... so this was Anurag''s life in a Metro but while signing off he disclosed a very interesting aspect of his life that he is a great cook and can toss up any thing in a wok… well that leaves us to wait and watch how easily will we digest his cooked up story in Metro.
