DVD Review: Laaga Chunari Mein Daag

By Joginder Tuteja

THE FILM

When the 2007 report card for Bollywood was written, there hardly would have been an article on ''Top-10 biggest disappointments of the year'' that didn''t mention Laaga Chunari Mein Daag. Rightly so, because the film deserved to be panned - and panned hard!

The film was truly a nightmarish experience for an audience which was always two steps ahead of probably director Pradeep Sarkar himself. Even as the Parineeta director was busy setting up a scene for things to come, the viewer knows pretty much what''s going to happen next. Outdated, clichéd, contrived - one is short of adjectives to describe this film which makes one terribly restless.

Now as the film''s DVD is out, there still doesn''t seem to be much redemption in sight for this film, which is an exercise in futility even for that minor target audience segment which would prefer to spend their home-viewing time in watching ''K'' serials.

If at all Laaga Chunari Mein Daag would be remembered, it would be for the most hilarious, innovative and downright stupid sequence towards the middle of the film. Which is this sequence? Well, it is an elaborate chain of events which could well be labeled as the ''Dummy''s guide for becoming a call girl''. Authored by Suchitra Pillai''s character and experimented on Rani, it forms the break point in the film which only takes it further downslide.

Performances in the film also couldn''t scale to a higher level due to limitations of the characterization and poor writing. Jaya Bachchan as a ''lachaar maa'', Anupam Kher as a ''let-me-shrug-away-my-responsibilities'' father, Abhishek Bachchan as a holier than thou young man, Konkona Sen as a carefree young sister.....the list of cardboard characters is endless in this film where even Rani Mukherjee couldn''t do much to save it from mediocrity.

When released, the film didn''t even take a heartening box office opening. Such weak were the film''s pre-release reports that Bhool Bhulaiyaa didn''t have a second thought to release on the same day as Laaga Chunari Mein Daag, something which defies the trend. Typically, on a week when a big film coming from the house of YRF releases, no film releases even on the weekend prior or later than that week. However, Laaga Chunari Mein Daag failed to create any such scare and Bhool Bhulaiyaa not just released on the same day but even massacred whatever little prospects, which this Rani Mukherjee starrer fathomed.

No wonder, if one would want to watch a social film about a small time girl turning into a prostitute and getting social acceptance courtesy a knight in a shining armor, Neha Dhupia''s Julie may have made for a better watch!

PACKAGING

Whatever be the fate of a film coming from YRF, their DVDs have always boasted of an eye catchy design and layout. Laaga Chunari Mein Daag is no exception as it carries a classy appeal to it with a mix of paper and plastic packaging.

DURATION

The film comes in a two DVD pack. While the film''s length is approximately 140 minutes, special features span another 1 hour.

After looking at ''The Making Of The Film'', one is quite sure about the fact that no wonder what the world felt about the film, director Pradeep Sakar was truly in love with his subject, script, actors and the entire filming process. This is evident from the sheer energy he demonstrates not only during making of the film but even when he is giving interviews about the film. Even though the initial round of ''Oh, I loved working with so and so'' by each of the actors belongs to the fast forward variety, a viewer''s attention is caught once action shifts to the shooting at the actual locations.

This is an area which in fact turns out to be one of the most interesting parts about the DVD, as the making of the film turns out to be far wittier and exciting than the film itself. Ironically, a film which was meant to be a tear jerker had some funny behind the scenes happenings throughout its shoot, both in India and abroad. Abhishek Bachchan''s pranks on the director and his jovial attitude during the shooting is brought out to the fullest which manages to draw some laughs.

The ''Special Features'' DVD is directed quite well with numerous scenes from the film reproduced along with split screen images of the actual shoot in place.

It is nostalgia revisited when the song ''Ehi Thaiyaa Motiya'' plays. Why? Because this unedited version choreographed on Hema Malini introduces the character played by Parikshit Sahni which was edited from the final cut of the film. As an admirer of the courtesan, he also has a few dialogues to enact that makes one keenly look forward to what''s more in store in this special features DVD.

Storyboarding is another interesting aspect of this DVD but unfortunately there isn''t much footage of the same. For students of cinema, a shot by shot breakdown of images, as evident in the samples of the title song and the powerful scene between Jaya Bachchan and Tinu Anand at the film''s beginning, make for a learning experience.

Also, it is inspiring to see Sarkar being a down to earth and humble person who doesn''t feel shy of picking up a broom and cleaning the steps of a ''ghat'' in order to fasten up the proceedings for getting a shot in place. However, it is surprising to see that during filming of one of the most contrived scenes of the film, Sarkar actually broke down while checking it out on the video monitor. Which was this scene? Watch the DVD, if you will, and find it out!

CONCLUSION

One of the most pertinent question which one raises after watching this film is not around the theme but the fact that how could Aditya Chopra approve of such a script which was far moved from the kind of films Yash Raj Films has been associated with over all these years. When even a one line synopsis of the film spelt disaster from miles away, it baffles one truly that the film was approved pronto and top actors entrusted with the job of being a part of this outdated saga.

Any redeeming feature about the DVD? Promo of Roadside Romeo, an animation film with voiceovers by Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor, which is all set to arrive in the summer of 2008!

Watch Laaga Chunari Mein Daag only if you belong to the breed of fans who are willing to watch anything and everything which features a Rani Mukherjee or an Abhishek Bachchan in it, even if it turns out to be one of their most forgettable outing in recent times!
