Indians are extremely passionate about two things one being Bollywood and the other is cricket. And when you give them the perfect blend of both what more can they

ask for?

Many of you might not know but Bollywood and cricket have an unending connection. Apparently some of our well known cricket players have acted for a number of

films. Take for example Ajay Jadeja who was seen in Khel, Vinod Kambli in Annarth, Kapil Dev in Iqbal, Salil Ankola in Chura Liya Hai

Tumne and Sunil Gavaskar in Maalamaal.

And now as our men in blue are all set to fight it out for the World Cup how can our very own Bollywood be left behind. If not casting cricketers in films they are making

films based on cricket.

And it does make sense. Knowing that the World Cup might hamper the collections for films, the best way is to hop onto the World Cup bandwagon and come out with

films that will interest audiences during this time.

Apparently such theme based films get planned way in advance; directors are always waiting to find the right opportunity. It may be a festival like Diwali or the World

Cup directors will come up with films which will appeal to the audience at that point of time.

Take for instance Milan Luthria the first in the league of this game will stump the audience with his film Hattrick. The film is all set to release on the March 16.

Interestingly the film is a well planned venture by the director; talking about the strategy he says "Yes the film was planned last April. My writer Rajat Arora had the idea

that the World Cup is a big event so why don't we plan a film around that. What appealed to me was that it wasn't a manipulative idea about using cricketers or the game

to put the film together. It is an interesting theme based around cricket. Also it's a great marketing opportunity as this is India's first World Cup when the media has come

of age and its penetration is very deep. And this is something to be made use of.” The film has cricket as its backdrop and takes a look at what happens to three set of

lives during the span of the tournament. The star cast includes Nana Patekar, Kunal Kapoor, Danny, Rimi Sen and Paresh Rawal.

The next to bowl the audience over is Say Salaam India. This film is cashing on the mindset of audiences during the period of the World Cup. This would be

documentary filmmaker Subhash Kapoor's debut film. Cricketers, he says, making their name today are from small towns, deprived of privileges that make sportsman

what they are, Talking about this theory he say "It's a film that talks about the emerging trends in cricket. More and more boys from smaller towns are being selected in

our cricket team. If you see the World Cup team which has gone to the West Indies, out of 14 there are 9 from smaller towns. So I felt that a film with this tone will work

well during the World Cup. And also during this time everyone is interested in cricket so eventually the film will also get a lot of hype”. Kapoor's film is about a cricket

coach working in an influential school team, while he believes the game's future rests elsewhere. The film stars Sanjay Suri, Sandhya Mridul and Milind Soman in the lead

roles.

Coming in at number three is Shoonya. This debut work has the distinction of being an early selection at the 2007 Rotterdam International Film Festival. The film

is directed by Arindam Mitra and written by Anurag Kashyap. The film is a modern-day interpretation of T S Eliot''s Murder in the Cathedral; the film explores the

subject of guilt, honour and paranoia of a life in a public domain. As metaphor, the director uses the powerful impact of the game of cricket, a revered sport in India which

attracts and generates vast amounts of money. The star cast includes Kay Kay Menon, Naseeruddin Shah, Satish Kaushik, Seema Biawas, Tulip Joshi and Ninad Kamat.

And finally the tail enders are Bombay to Goa and Meerabai Not Out. Bombay to Goa is a fun film loosely based on the lines of the original

Amitabh Bachchan and Aroona Irani starrer. The film is directed by Raj Pendurkar and stars laughter challenge contestants like Raju Srivastav and Ahsaan Qureshi

along with Tinu Anand, Jagdeep and Asrani. Also interestingly the film also stars the entire cricket team - yes our very own cricket team. However due to budget

constraints all they could afford were look-alikes.

Meerabai Not Out a film directed by Chandrakant Kulkarni and stars cricket's item girl Mandira Bedi. The film revolves around Mandira and her obsession

towards Anil Kumble. Interestingly in the film Hattrick Rimii Sen's character is also obsessed with wicketkeeper-batsman Mahendra Dhoni.

Hopefully these films won't create an overdose of cricket amongst the audience and instead make the passion for cricket even stronger. So here's wishing our Indian

cricket team all the best to win the World Cup.
