1994 was a special year for Sushmita Sen. Early that year, she pulled an upset and defeated Aishwariya Rai, to win the Miss India beauty pageant. In May that year, she went on to win the Miss Universe title at the age of 19. It was India's first and suddenly every girl in India, aspired to be a beauty queen.

Articulate and intelligent, she chose to pursue a career in Bollywood, which has done little justice to her abilities. Most of her movies did little more than moderate business. Her natural confidence seems to hamper her potrayal of leading roles in Bollywood movies, characters of women who need to look vulnerable at some level. Sushmita looks too intelligent and sophisticated to suit typical Bollywood productions.

Her successful movies are Biwi No.1 1999, Aankhen 2002 and Main Hoon Na 2004. She also tried acting offbeat movies like Filhaal... 2002. Her upcoming projects include a couple of foreign projects Karma, Confessions and Holi and The Expat supposedly with Richard Gere opposite her.
