An Interview With Nitin Shingal

By IndiaFM News Bureau

Nitin Shingal is a new entrant in the breed of talented filmmakers. His passion for cinema compelled him to assist filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra. He worked as assistant director in Munnabhai MBBS and Parineeta. After that he joined Yash Raj Films and assisted Kunal Kohli for Fanaa. Then he moved on to make his own film venture through a short film Kindle. Nitin speaks to IndiaFM about his film and his future project.

You did your MBA and then came into films. Why did you choose films and tell us something about your background?
I always wanted to get into films but it's not quite easy. I used to write scripts while I was doing my MBA. I was always inclined to film making but I didn't know how to go about it. Meanwhile I wrote an email to Mr. Vidhu Vinod Chopra, who responded to my email and that is how I started assisting him. After assisting him for Munnabhai MBBS and Parineeta, I moved on to assist Kunal Kohli for Fanaa. Finally, I thought to star my own movie.

After assisting for commercial films why did you think of making film only for the Festival audience?
I did not plan to make this film only for the festival circuit. It just happened. When I started my career this was one of the stories that I was working on. I realized that I should try my hand at full fledged direction. This story was complete. So I made this film. It's just a coincidence that this is for a niche audience.

Plus, when I would say I would rather see and access myself how I direct at a small level first before jumping to a full length feature. Now as it's ready I thought it best suits the festival circuit. But I know our country has become more open to new ideas and our audience looking out for different movies. So, I think this might work with some different section of the people, who are not just so called "Festival audience.”

Tell us something about your movie.
The movie is about a household middle class family, where Sushant Singh Partho and Dippanita Sharma Mishti play a couple. Soon they are blessed with a child. Once, an old aunt comments on the child's features. She says, "She is very beautiful, and she has all qualities of a Ganguly family except her nose.”

This comment gets noticed by Sushant and he starts to think about it. Soon he reaches a stage of such tremendous mental imbalance that he strangles his own one year child unknowingly. He thinks that the child is not his own. Through the film we see that something has been disturbing Partho, which is portrayed through the nightmares. Aunty's comments bring his subconscious ugly and there on how the family copes with it.

The thought behind this is that - one forgets big incidents in ones lives but how a small incident can affect someone so much. While in this case the Aunty's comments affected Partho that he did such a dreadful thing.

What prompted you to write such a dark thriller?
I remember my mother told me a similar story long back. As far as writing this script is concerned it's just a thought that came into my mind and I developed that idea into a script.

Are you planning to release your film on a commercial level? If yes then how are you trying to target it to audiences?
Well, first of all I am sending my film to festivals like IIFLA. Oberhausen Germany, Edinburgh, London, Pusan, Tokyo. etc.

Since in India there is not a defined market for short films, it will be tough. But I am planning to sell the film for satellite rights or home video for DVDs or Theatre release if possible.

I hope more people see the film and the market for short films open up.

What kind of music does this film have?
It has a background score, which creates a vague look to this thriller. As I said it's a thriller and doesn't have any songs in it, but it has original sound track.

What are you working on after this? Are you planning to make commercial movies as well?
Yes, I'll be doing mainstream movies in future. Currently I am working on a script which is a complete commercial flick. It will be a thriller again but I'll stick to mainstream cinema.
